Places of interest

Illugastadir in Vatnsnes is a known historical place in Iceland.  The Illugastadir’s murders led to the last execution in Iceland in 1830.

Hindisvik is an inlet on the northern part of Vatnsnes.  There is a good possibility to see seals in that area whereas it is a seal reserve.

Hvitserkur is mass of igneous rock, about 15 metres high and is located on the seashore at the base of the western part of Hrutafjordur fjord.  There is active birdlife in Hvitserkur which is the base of various species.

Borgarvirki is a columnar basalt about 10-15 metres high, which rises from the ridge between Vesturhop and Vididalur.  There is a viewing dial on its highest point.

Kolugljufur is the name of the gorge in Vididlasa river.  It is approximately one km long and about 40-60 m deep.  The river drops into the gorge in two scenic waterfalls.

Bjarg in Midfjordur is the birth place of Grettir Asmundarson, who is one of the strongest men known in Icelandic history.  Grettir was the main hero in Grettissaga.  In Bjarg is a memorial to Asdis, Grettir’s mother, and a small reserve where Asdis allegedly berried Grettir’s head.

Gauksmyrartjorn is a lake that is located south of the main highway - just across from the farm Gauksmyri.  The lake dried up around 1960, but has now been restored.  The birdlife by the lake is very active, and during the summers months approximately 15-20 species are known to stay there.
