Hiking

Hrutafjardarhals (Hrutafjordur hill):

HrútafjardarhálsFrom Brandagil in Hrutafjordur to Huki in Midfjordur, there is approximately 9 km hike over Hrutafjardarhals. You can follow tracks, horse- and hiking paths in a pieceful and beautiful landscape.   The elevation is approximately 240 m, and in fair weather over seven districts can be viewed from the hill.

There are several lakes scattered over Hrutafjardarhals.  The lakes contribute to a prosperous wild life in the area which is rich in birdlife, especially the great northern diver. When observing the northern diver, you must keep in mind that each couple takes over one lake; hence the population is scattered.

Hveraborgir:

Sika river is known for its natural hot springs in which bathing is possible.  The bathing area is called Hveraborg and is an ideal resting place for hikers and travelers.  Hveraborg is located approximately 18,5 km from the bottom of Hrutafjorður.  To get there you can drive 11 km on a track to the farm Fosssel.  From there on you need to hike about 7 km. Duration is 1,5 hours and the elevation is 260 m.

A hut was built by the hot springs in 2006.  You can access a key to it in Stadarskali.  Just below the hut is a pool that is built of natural rocks.  Hot water is led by a  pipe from the hot-spring to the pool.  Please be careful because the water can be quite hot and you can get burned. Nevertheless, it is possible to cool down the water by moving the pipe and stopping the water flow into the pool.  You can then buck some cold water from the river into the pool.  There is a small basin in the river a little further down that is also good for bathing.  However, the water there is colder than in the pool.

Hrutafjardara (Hrutafjordur river)

From the farm Ospaksstadir in Hrutafjordur is a pleasant hiking path along Hrutafjardara river.  The hike starts at the bottom of Holtavorduheidi (on road 1), you follow a track to Ospaksstadarseli and can continue the hike along the river to Rettarfoss waterfall.  In various places on the way, you can see how the river has beautifully cut its way through the rock. Please go quietly about during the open season.

In the neighbourhood

For those who like shorter hikes, there is a nice walk from Stadarskali to the church at Stadur.  You can take a look at the horse-rock that is located north of the cemetery.  If you like to take a closer look at the church you can access a key in the lobby at Stadarskali.

It is peaceful to hike along Hrutafjordur river where there is an active birdlife is.  In the evenings there is often a beautiful view along Hrutafjordur over to the mountains in Strandir - bathing in the evening sun!  Please go quietly about during the open season.
