Hrutafjardarhals (Hrutafjordur hill):
From Brandagil in Hrutafjordur to Huki in Midfjordur, there is approximately 9 km hike over Hrutafjardarhals. You can follow tracks, horse- and hiking paths in a pieceful and beautiful landscape. The elevation is approximately 240 m, and in fair weather over seven districts can be viewed from the hill.
There are several lakes scattered over Hrutafjardarhals. The lakes contribute to a prosperous wild life in the area which is rich in birdlife, especially the great northern diver. When observing the northern diver, you must keep in mind that each couple takes over one lake; hence the population is scattered.

From the farm Ospaksstadir in Hrutafjordur is a pleasant hiking path along Hrutafjardara river. The hike starts at the bottom of Holtavorduheidi (on road 1), you follow a track to Ospaksstadarseli and can continue the hike along the river to Rettarfoss waterfall. In various places on the way, you can see how the river has beautifully cut its way through the rock. Please go quietly about during the open season.
In the neighbourhood
For those who like shorter hikes, there is a nice walk from Stadarskali to the church at Stadur. You can take a look at the horse-rock that is located north of the cemetery. If you like to take a closer look at the church you can access a key in the lobby at Stadarskali.
It is peaceful to hike along Hrutafjordur river where there is an active birdlife is. In the evenings there is often a beautiful view along Hrutafjordur over to the mountains in Strandir - bathing in the evening sun! Please go quietly about during the open season.
